How Time Calculation Works

Unlike base-10 decimal mathematics, time measurement uses a mixed-radix sexagesimal system (base-60 for minutes and seconds, base-24 for hours in a day, and 7 days in a standard week). Adding or subtracting time durations requires carrying over or borrowing across these distinct unit thresholds.

Duration Carryover & Borrowing

When adding, every 60 seconds rolls into 1 minute, every 60 minutes rolls into 1 hour, and every 24 hours rolls into 1 day. When subtracting, if a lower unit is smaller than the subtracted amount, 1 unit is borrowed from the next higher unit (e.g. 1 minute becomes 60 seconds).

Exact Date & Calendar Math

When calculating across calendar boundaries, our tool automatically accounts for month day-counts (28, 29, 30, or 31 days) and Gregorian leap years, providing precise resulting timestamps, weekdays, and elapsed intervals.
